September Program

October 4th marks the anniversary of the first launch of an artificial satellite, Russia’s Sputnik. We are now very dependent on satellites; we receive television signals from geostationary satellites, we listen to music from XM and Sirius Radio satellites, we find our way with Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) and people communicate with each other from anywhere on the planet using Iridium satellites. Ham Radio groups launched low earth orbit (LEO) satellites allowing communicate with one another.

Mike, WA2ACV, built an X-Wing antenna described in Monitoring Times Magazine and he wound up listening to pirates. Not the swashbuckling kind of pirates more like the pirate radio sort. Attend the September OBARC meeting and Mike will regale you with another one of his satellite reception adventures.

Old Barney Licensing Class

Based upon our success from the last two "Ham Cram" we are holding another Technician Cram session in the early fall. The session begins at 8 AM at the Ocean Acres Community Center which is the same location we hold the meetings.

A VE session is held around 4 in the afternoon to administer the FCC test. Come at 8 AM with a little studying and a lot of desire and leave in the afternoon with an FCC issued Amateur Technician Class license.

We send study material about 10 days before the "Cram."

There is no longer a code requirement for obtaining a ham license.

If you have any interest in taking this class, please let us know by using our Feedback Form or call Urb, W2DEC at 609-296-57856.

There is a $15 fee to take the class. Lunch and study materials are included. The fee is waived for anyone 18 or under but you must register.

We will also be running a General Cram in the near futures. Let us know if you're interested in a General class.

Parkway North Traffic Pattern Change

On September 28th the ramp that provides a North bound entrance to the Garden State Parkway, for East (east only) bound Bay Ave traffic, will be closed for two weeks.

This change will affect those members that usually use that ramp after a club meeting.

The state recommended detour is NOT recommended for OBARC members. Instead, turn left when exiting the meeting site, travel south to Route 72. Turn left onto Route 72 and enter the parkway, north bound, about one quarter mile later.

There are other possible paths of travel such as driving into Barnegat, turn north onto Route 9 then at Route 532, Waretown, and travel west to the Parkway. Your choice.
